Mothers' Union was started in 1876 by Mary Sumner, a Vicar's wife, in the village of Old Alresford , Hants. She formed a ladies’ group in the parish, of all classes – rich and poor, where young mums could come and share the joys and problems of motherhood. They also prayed and read the Bible together.
We now have 4 million members worldwide in over 83 countries. Mothers' Union has representation on the women’s commission of the United Nations, and campaigns on issues such as international debt and family welfare. Mothers’ Union members are involved in outreach projects in prisons, hospitals, parenting courses, holidays and literacy. Our members worldwide, are united in prayer and fellowship.
Here in Rochester Diocese we continue to reach out in love as Mary Sumner did to our local communities and to our worldwide links with both practical and financial support.

Mothers’ Union Prayer
Loving Lord, we thank you for your love so freely given to us all. We pray for families around the world. Bless the work of the Mothers’ Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life. Empowered by your spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
